Updated Q2 2026

About Castle Rock

Castle Rock is the county seat of Douglas County and one of the fastest-growing towns in Colorado. Named for the prominent rock butte at its center, the town blends a charming historic downtown with sprawling modern developments, outlet shopping, and easy access to both Denver and Colorado Springs.

Location

Castle Rock sits about 30 miles south of downtown Denver along I-25, roughly halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs. The drive to DTC takes about 20 minutes, and downtown Denver is 35–45 minutes north. The town's elevation of 6,200 feet provides cooler summers and genuine four-season weather.

Wide variety — from affordable new-build townhomes and starter homes in communities like Meadows and Crystal Valley to luxury custom homes in The Meadows and Castlewood Ranch. Several new master-planned communities are under development on the town's edges.

Schools

Douglas County School District (RE-1)

Castle Rock students attend schools in the top-ranked Douglas County system. Castle View High School and Douglas County High School are both well-regarded. The town is also home to several STEM-focused charter schools and the Philip S. Miller campus.

Lifestyle & Recreation

Downtown Castle Rock features the Philip S. Miller Park (with a 200-step Challenge Hill staircase), local restaurants, breweries, and a thriving events calendar. The Outlets at Castle Rock draw shoppers from across the region. The Rock Park, Metzler Ranch Open Space, and Ridgeline Open Space offer excellent trail systems. The town hosts Starlighting, a beloved holiday tradition, and summer concert series.

Who Lives Here

A broad mix — first-time buyers attracted by relative affordability, growing families who want Douglas County schools, remote workers who appreciate the small-town lifestyle, and commuters willing to trade drive time for space and value.

What Makes It Unique

Castle Rock offers Douglas County's top-rated schools and outdoor lifestyle at a lower price point than communities further north — combined with a genuine historic downtown anchored by the iconic rock butte, it feels more like a Colorado mountain town than a suburb.
